Why call this blog Getting There…(2 steps forward, 1 back)? I suppose it comes out of reflecting on scriptures such as Philippians 3.12-14:
12 Not that I have already obtained this or have already reached the goal; but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13 Beloved, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on towards the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus.
If the Apostle Paul hadn’t ‘arrived’, I certainly haven’t! And I can’t do it alone. As a Christian and a member of the Uniting Church, I value the description in the Basis of Union of the Church as ‘a pilgrim people’. So I’m not just a pilgrim, nor am I on a lone journey; I am on the way—getting there—with wonderful sisters and brothers.
What about the subtitle? If I’m getting there, it’s rarely in a straight line. St Paul ‘strains forward’, but I take at least one step backwards for each couple forwards. Sometimes, the figures are reversed! Yet God’s grace is always there for me, and that’s the only reason I can ever claim to be getting there.
